The Village

These are Pump Handle Cottage, Midcot and Hammer's Cottage, and they were built in the 18th century. However they also have features, which could be even older.

These buildings are of special interest, as they were built for the families of labourers rather than their masters. Originally there were four of them in a terrace, although they were later converted to the present three in 1886. All of them feature thick walls, low ceilings and large fireplaces with luxurious bread ovens.

It is also worth noting that Pump Handle Cottage had a working water pump. This is one of the earliest in the Parish, and it came to form part of a network of springs and pumps, which served the whole village. It continued to be used by villagers up until 1929.

The present day photo was taken summer 2008 whilst the old photograph was posted in 1898, however the photo clearly shows them prior to convertion.
